NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet today approved the development of 12 industrial smart cities under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme with an investment of 286.02 bln rupees, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

"Spanning across 10 states and strategically planned along six major corridors, these projects represent a significant leap forward in India's quest to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and economic growth," the government said in a press release.

These industrial areas will be located in Khurpia in Uttrakhand, Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab, Dighi in Maharashtra, Palakkad in Kerela, Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar, Zaheerabad in Telangana, Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan. Besides these states, the government has also sanctioned an industrial corridor in a state where the Model Code of Conduct is currently on, Vaishnaw said.

There is a Model Code of Conduct in operation in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana due to upcoming assembly elections. During the Model Code of Conduct, the central and state governments cannot announce new investments, but can only take forward the projects already underway.

The Cabinet approval is aligned with the announcement in the Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) to set up investment-ready industrial parks in 100 cities. "Our government will facilitate the development of investment-ready plug-and-play industrial parks with complete infrastructure in or near 100 cities, in partnership with the states and private sector, by better using town-planning schemes," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her Budget speech.

The 12 industrial cities sanctioned today will help tap investment potential worth 1.53 trln rupees, Vaishnaw said. It will also help generate 939,000 employment opportunities, he added.
