NDA wins 11 of 12 seats in Rajya Sabha by-polls, crosses majority

NEW DELHI – National Democratic Alliance candidates have won unopposed the by-election for 11 out of 12 Rajya Sabha seats for which elections were scheduled on Sep 3. With these seats and support of six nominated members, the NDA now has crossed the halfway mark in the Rajya Sabha. The only candidate from the Opposition to win was Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was elected unopposed from Telangana. Among the winning candidates, nine were from the Bharatiya Janata Party and two from its allies.
By-elections for these 12 seats were necessitated after several of the members were elected in the Lok Sabha elections.
Among those elected from the BJP included Minister of State in the Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu and Minister of State in the Ministry Minority Affairs George Kurian.
With nine new members, the BJP's strength in the Rajya Sabha will increase to 96 and the National Democratic Alliance's strength to 116. The Opposition's strength will rise by one seat to 85.
Bittu was elected from Rajasthan while Kurian got Rajya Sabha berth from Madhya Pradesh today. From Bihar, Rashtriya Lok Morcha leader Upendra Kushwaha and Supreme Court lawyer Manan Kumar Mishra were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. BJP leader Kiran Choudhry was also elected unopposed from Haryana. In Odisha, BJP's Mamata Mohanta, who recently resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the Biju Janata Dal to join the BJP, also returned to Rajya Sabha unopposed.
On Monday, BJP's Ranjan Das and Rameswar Teli were elected unopposed from Assam while Nationalist Congress Party's Nitin Patil and BJP's Dhairyasheel Patil were elected from Maharashtra. Rajib Bhatacharjee got elected unopposed from Tripura.
The Rajya Sabha polls for 12 seats were slated to be held on Sep 3. With all the seats sending candidates unopposed, there will be no election now. The process of filing nominations started on Aug 14 and the last date of nomination withdrawal was Aug 27. At least 10 of the 12 seats fell vacant as sitting members, including ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Jyotiraditya Scindia were elected to the Lok Sabha. End
