NEW DELHI – West Bengal Police today batons, tear gas shells and water cannons against students protesting against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month. The protestors were marching towards the secretariat demanding the resignation of state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the horrific incident.

The protestors gathered in the college and started marching towards the secretariat. The protestors were raising slogans against Banerjee, seeking her resignation. The police, however, said that no permission was given to any organisation to hold the protest in the area.

The riot police used tear gas shells, batons and water cannons to stop the protestors.

The ruling party of West Bengal – Trinamool Congress – alleged that the protest was orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party to destabilise the state. "Make no mistake, this isn't a protest for justice, it's a chaos orchestrated by the BJP – hired goons running amok, smashing barricades and attacking on-duty Police officers. This is a deliberate plot to incite unrest and destabilise Bengal!," the Trinamool Congress said on X, formerly Twitter.

The BJP attacked the Trinamool government for using force against protestors and called for a 12-hour strike in the state on Wednesday to protest the police action. "The images of police high-handedness from Kolkata have angered every person who values democratic principles. In Didi's West Bengal, to help rapists and criminals is valued, but it's a crime to speak for women's safety," BJP National President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda said in a post on X.

A 31-year-old junior doctor was found dead at a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Aug 9. The West Bengal police have arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. There have been protests and strikes by doctors in several cities in the country over the case. On Aug 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the probe into the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Taking a suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of the junior doctor, the Supreme Court on Aug 20 formed a national task force to make recommendations on the safety and working conditions of medical professionals.  End
