--IMD: India Aug 27 rainfall 14.3 mm, 93% above normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 27 rainfall 716.4 mm, 7% above normal 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 14.3 mm, 93% above the normal of 7.4 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 716.4 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal of 672.1 mm for the period, it said.

Three out of four homogeneous regions in the country received above-normal showers. Rainfall was 28% above normal at 13.7 mm in east and northeast India, and 72% above normal in northwest India at 9.5 mm. Rainfall was 194% above normal in the central region at 25.0 mm. The southern region received 31% below normal at 4.0 mm.

The weather bureau has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Gujarat today. The weather bureau has also issued a red alert for Saurashtra and Kutch in the state till Thursday. A few parts of Saurashtra will likely get exceptionally heavy rainfall today, it said.

The weather bureau has also issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in east Rajasthan, central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, Jharkhand, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and coastal Karnataka for today. A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, and an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 20 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in nine, and "deficient" in five subdivisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in two subdivisions since Jun 1.  End
