NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to create five new districts in the Union territory of Ladakh, Home Minister Amit Shah said today. The decision is aimed at the all-round development of Ladakh and ensuring that public welfare schemes reach every doorstep, the minister said.

Shah informed about the decision in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The new districts - Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang - would take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by improving governance in every nook and cranny, he said. The five new districts will raise the tally of districts in Ladakh to seven, including Leh and Kargil, the ministry said.

It has asked the Ladakh administration to form a committee to assess various aspects related to the formation of new districts, and submit a report within three months. The committee will assess several aspects related to the formation of districts, such as headquarters, boundaries, structure, and the creation of posts. Based on this report, the Union Territory of Ladakh will send a final proposal on the creation of new districts to the home ministry for further action.

Ladakh is one of the least populated areas of the country. The ministry said that as the region is extremely inaccessible, the district administration was facing many difficulties in reaching the grassroot level. "After the formation of these districts, now all the public welfare schemes of the central government and Ladakh administration will be able to reach the people easily and more and more people will be able to take advantage of them," it said.  End
