--Cabinet OKs Vigyan Dhara Scheme with outlay of 105.79 bln rupees 

 

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet today approved the continuation of three umbrella schemes of the Department of Science and Technology, merging them into a unified central scheme called 'Vigyan Dhara'. An outlay of 105.79 bln rupees has been provided for the scheme for the period from 2021-22 (Apr-Mar) to 2025-26.

 

The scheme is in line with one of the key announcements of the Union Budget of skill development, and will provide internship to students of classes 11 and 12. "This has been done to revamp the conventional method of rote learning in science and technology and bring real life opportunities to these students," Union Minister Ashiwini Vaishnaw said at a Cabinet briefing in New Delhi. 

 

The scheme focusses on institutional and human capacity building, research, development, and innovation, technology development, and deployment in science and technology. Under the scheme, students of undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses, and post-doctorate diploma and research will be provided fellowships "for practical experience and to make them employable", Vaishnaw said. 

 

Under its third pillar, the scheme would focus on international research collaboration in cutting edge research. Joint research projects and joint fellowships will be promoted under the scheme as well. 

 

"Fourth pillar has been based on issues that affect our society such as resilience, climate change, and nano technology will help bring an imporovement and change in the society," Vaishnaw said. 

 

The fifth pillar will focus on development in areas like clean energy. The scheme aims at reinforcing the efforts of the government towards promoting innovations at all levels, starting from school level to higher education, and for industries and startups through targeted interventions, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Significant support will be extended to increase collaboration between academia, the government, and industries, it said.  End
