NEW DELHI – A day after the Congress and the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference announced their alliance for the upcoming assembly election in the Union territory, Home Minister Amit Shah accused the former party of "playing with the unity and security of the country".

In a post on X, Shah demanded to know Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi's stand on his ally's manifesto promising the restoration of Article 370 and special status for the erstwhile state.

Asking the Congress to clear its stand on the National Conference's "divisive thinking and policies of autonomy to Kashmir", Shah posted, "Does Congress support National Conference's promise of a separate flag for Jammu and Kashmir again? Do Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party support JKNC's (National Conference's) decision to push Jammu and Kashmir back into the era of unrest and terrorism by bringing back Article 370 and Article 35A?"

He also questioned the party's stand on resumption of trade with Pakistan through the Line of Control. Shah claimed this would help cross-border terrorism. "Does Congress support bringing back the era of terrorism, terror and shutdown by re-employing the family members of those involved in terrorism and stone-pelting incidents in government jobs," the home minister asked.

Shah also claimed that the alliance with the National Conference shows the Congress party's true anti-reservation face. "Is the Congress supporting the National Conference's promise to end the reservation of Dalits, Gujjars, Bakarwals and Paharis and do injustice to them again? Does Congress Party support JKNC's politics of discrimination between Jammu and Valley," he further posted.

Elections to the 90 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to be held in three phases between Sep 18 and Oct 1. The votes cast will be counted on Oct 4. On Thursday, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah announced that his party will contest the polls in alliance with the Congress on all 90 seats.  End
