MUMBAI – India's tur imports rose 184.4% from a year ago to 84,826.56 tn, led by higher imports from Myanmar and Sudan, according to data from the commerce and industry ministry. India imported 29,829.77 tn tur, or pigeon peas, in June last year.

 

The imports from Myanmar jumped 146.5% on year to 38,150 tn in June, while imports from Sudan surged 330.7% on year to 37,421.44 tn. Imports from Kenya grew 150.0% on year to 720 tn and from Nigeria zoomed 3,409% to 2,642.16 tn in June, the data showed.

 

Sudan pipped Mozambique to become the second-largest tur importer in Apr-Jun, shipping 64,490.15 tn, up nearly 120%. Imports from Mozambique declined 16.3% on year to 33,493.90 tn in Apr-Jun.

 

In June, imports from Mozambique rose 18.5% on year to 2,978.25 tn, but was sharply lower than 14,994.75 tn in May.

 

India also imported tur from Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda in June. The number of countries exporting tur to India fell to eight in June against nine last year.

 

The value of tur imported in June was $113.28 mln, up 260.4% on year from $31.43 mln a year ago. The cost of imports per tn rose 26.7% on year to $1,335.43 in June compared to $1,053.64 a year ago.

 

India's tur imports in Jan-Jun declined 14.7% on year to 350,535.79 tn from 410,923.47 tn a year ago due to a decline in imports from Myanmar and Mozambique.

 

In the ongoing kharif season, farmers have sown tur over 4.6 mln ha as of Aug 16, up 12.4% from a year ago, data from the farm ministry showed. The normal area for tur for the kharif season is 4.56 mln ha.

 

As of Aug 22, the shipment price of the lemon variety of pigeon peas from Myanmar to India fell by $45 per tn to $1,215 per tn from a week ago, data from Global Pulse Confederation showed. The shipment price of arusha variety from Tanzania declined $40 a tn to $910 per tn and gajri variety from Mozambique declined $10 a tn to $860 per tn.

 

Domestic tur prices today fell by 100-200 rupees to 10,800 rupees per 100 kg in the benchmark market of Akola due to weak demand. End
