India rains 14% below normal today, 3% above normal since Jun 1

--IMD: India Aug 22 rainfall 6.9 mm, 14% below normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 22 rainfall 657.3 mm, 3% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 6.9 mm, 14% below the normal of 8.0 mm for the day, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India has received 657.3 mm rainfall, 3% above the normal of 635.4 mm for the period, it said.

 

Three out of four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers. Rainfall was 14% below normal at 4.9 mm in northwest India, and 24% below normal at 6.9 mm in central India. Showers in the southern peninsula were 13% below normal at 5.5 mm. Rainfall was 1% above normal in the east and northeast region at 12.2 mm.

 

Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the weekend, the IMD said. The weather bureau also warned of extremely heavy rainfall over interior parts of Gujarat during Sat-Mon, over west Madhya Pradesh on Sun-Mon, and over Saurashtra and Kutch on Mon-Tue. Important agricultural parts in eastern India, such as the plains of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar are also expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next seven days, it said.

 

Since Jun 1, central Maharashtra has received 36% above normal rainfall at 723.5 mm, while Saurashtra and Kutch have got 19% higher precipitation, according to the data from the bureau. 

 

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 20 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in nine, and "deficient" in five sub-divisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in two sub-divisions since Jun 1.  End
