NEW DELHI – Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the weekend, the India Meteorological Department said. The agency has urged farmers in the area to drain excess water from fields with standing crop and from fruit orchards to avoid stagnation.

The weather bureau also warned of extremely heavy rainfall over interior parts of Gujarat during Sat-Mon, over west Madhya Pradesh on Sun-Mon, and over Saurashtra and Kutch on Mon-Tue. Important agricultural parts in eastern India, such as the plains of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar are also expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next seven days, it said.

Since Jun 1, central Maharashtra has received 36% above normal rainfall at 723.5 mm, while Saurashtra and Kutch have got 19% higher precipitation, according to the data from the bureau.

Additionally, the meteorological office expects a low pressure area over north Bangladesh to bring heavy to extremely heavy showers over Assam and Meghalaya during the next two days. The east and northeastern parts of the country have been receiving heavy rainfall over the past few weeks, which has helped bring down the overall deficit in the region. Since Jun 1, the east and northeastern parts of the country have received 12% below normal rainfall at 868.2 mm. However, over the past few weeks, the deficit has narrowed from nearly 20%.

The agency said continuous heavy rainfall in the eastern parts of the country has led to submerging of transplanted rice and vegetables in low-lying areas and recovery of young rice seedlings is unlikely. Farmers in these regions have been advised to collect short-duration rice varieties after the cessation of rainfall, it said.

Meanwhile, the western end of the monsoon trough lies near its normal position and its eastern end to the north of its normal position, the weather forecaster said.  End
