NEW DELHI – The collegium of the Supreme Court today recommended three lawyers--Ajay Digpaul, Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, and Shwetasree Majumder--for appointment to the Delhi High Court as judges. The high court is currently functioning with 39 judges, against a sanctioned strength of 60.

In October, the then chief justice of the high court, in consultation with his two most senior colleagues, had recommended the names of the three lawyers for appointment as judges.

The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud said it had scrutinised and evaluated the material placed before it and also perused the observations made by the Department of Justice.

About Ajay Digpaul, the collegium said he has a good practice and 31 years of experience in several branches of law. He has argued a number of cases, which is reflected in his appearance in 42 reported judgments delivered by the high court.

The collegium said Shankar, too, has an extensive practice that is reflected in 180 reported judgments delivered in cases in which he appeared or argued. It noted that his average net professional income was 16.2 mln rupees per annum in the past five years.

The collegium said the inputs about Majumder provided by the justice department indicated that he is a competent lawyer in the field of intellectual property rights who has been practising for more than 21 years and has vast experience in civil matters, particularly intellectual property rights, technology, advertising, and trade secrets, which would be a valuable addition to the court.

The collegium remarked that Majumder's expertise in the area of intellectual property rights is significant in view of the pendency of such matters in the high court which are being dealt with by a dedicated intellectual property division. Majumder's professional income in the past five years has been 18.4 mln rupees per annum.  End
