MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura today. It has issued an orange alert for the same places for Thursday.
A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, while an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.
Extremely heavy showers are very likely to continue over Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura during the next two days, the department said. During the week, very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of northeast and Odisha, the weather bureau said.
In view of the extremely heavy rainfall, the department said there is a risk of moderate flash flooding over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura today. The weather bureau also said a low-to-moderate flash flood risk is likely over Uttarakhand today.
The department has suggested farmers postpone sowing of black gram, radish, sesame, and green gram in the Brahmaputra valley zone in Assam. It has also asked farmers in Meghalaya to postpone sowing of cowpea.
"Drain out excess water from rice fields to prevent submergence of transplanted seedlings and from groundnut in Tripura," the weather bureau said in view of extremely heavy rains. Similar practises were suggested to farmers in Mizoram growing rice, groundnut, sesame, soybean, ginger, turmeric, and vegetables to prevent water logging.
Moving towards the southern peninsula, the weather bureau said very heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of Kerala during the next 24 hours. During the same time period, extremely heavy showers are very likely over Lakshadweep, it said.
Strong surface winds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph are likely over Kerala and Lakshadweep during the next 24 hours. Moderate rainfall is very likely over Kerala, Mahe, costal Karnataka, and Lakshadweep during the week.
In the past 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls was recorded over parts of Meghalaya. Very heavy showers were seen over parts of Tripura, Kerala, Mahe, Uttarakhand, Gujarat region, and Odisha, the department said. End
