NEW DELHI - The Bharatiya Janata Party today nominated nine candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha bypolls in various states, including Union Minister of State for the Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying George Kurian. The BJP has nominated Bittu from Rajasthan and Kurian from Madhya Pradesh.
The party fielded Mamata Mohanta from Odisha, who recently resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the Biju Janata Dal to join the BJP. The party also fielded Manan Kumar Mishra, senior advocate and Bar Council of India chairman, as its candidate from Bihar. The BJP has fielded Kiran Choudhary from Haryana, Rajib Bhattacharjee from Tripura, Mission Ranjan Das and Rameswar Teli from Assam, and Dhairyashil Patil from Maharashtra.
The Rajya Sabha polls for 12 seats are slated to be held on Sep 3. The process of filing nominations started on Aug 14 and will continue till Wednesday. At least 10 of the 12 seats fell vacant as sitting members, including ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, were elected to the Lok Sabha.
With these elections, the government is hoping to gain majority in the Upper house by winning at least 11 seats. In the current 229-member Rajya Sabha, the BJP and its allies have 105 members. With six nominated members, the government’s strength increases to 111, which is four short of the half-way mark of 115. End
