NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court today asked the civil aviation ministry to submit by Friday the file notings relating to the annulment of the tender process for Nagpur's Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. The court was hearing a curative petition from the government and the Airports Authority of India against its verdict allowing the GMR Group to operate the airport.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the judgment of the Bombay High Court, which the Supreme Court upheld, was delivered without making the airports authority or the government party to the case. The high court heard the case behind the Centre's back, said Mehta, appearing for the airports authority and the government.
In 2019, GMR emerged as the highest bidder in the tender process conducted by MIHAN, a joint venture between the Maharashtra Airport Development Company and the Airports Authority of India. However, the Maharashtra government decided to annul the tender in March 2020. In 2021, the high court quashed the state government’s order and asked MIHAN to execute the agreement signed with GMR.
In 2022, the apex court upheld the high court's decision. In May 2023, the top court dismissed the Centre's review petition against its verdict.
Today, shares of GMR Airports Infrastructure Ltd ended 0.8% lower at 95.55 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. End
