India net adds 1.57 mln new mobile phone users in June

MUMBAI – Indian telecom operators net added 1.57 mln new wireless telecom subscribers in June, a slowdown from the 2.0 mln new subscribers added in May, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The wireless telecom subscriber base grew 0.13% in June over May. While the subscriber base of Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio grew on month, Vodafone Idea continued to net lose subscribers.
Reliance Jio added 1.91 mln new users in June to end with a market share of 40.71%. Bharti Airtel added 1.25 mln new subscribers and had a market share of 33.23%. Vodafone India lost 860,889 subscribers in June, which cut its market share to 18.56%. The company has been losing customers for the past several months, but it lost fewer customers in June than the 924,797 it lost in May. Government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd lost 745,450 and 3,927 subscribers, respectively, during the month.
The wireless telecom density in India increased to 83.45% in June from 83.40% in May. The urban wireless telecom density fell to 127.03% in June from 127.04% in May. However, the rural telecom density increased to 59.32% in June from 59.26% in May.
All parts of the country except Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Kolkata showed growth in wireless subscribers during the month of June, TRAI said.
The total broadband subscribers in June was 940.75 mln, up from 935.13 mln in May. Telephone subscriptions in rural areas grew just 0.13% to 538.51 mln in June, which was lower than the 0.19% growth seen in urban areas. This is a contrast to May, when new telephone subscribers in rural India grew by 0.28%, outpacing the 0.15% growth in urban areas. The overall telephone density in the country was 85.95% in June, a slight improvement compared to 85.87% in May.
