MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 10.6 mm, 32% above the normal of 8.0 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 642.9 mm of rain, 4% above the normal of 619.8 mm for the period, it said.

Three out of four homogeneous regions in the country received above-normal showers, the agency said. Rainfall was 63% above normal at 17.8 mm in east and northeast India, and 28% above normal at 7.4 mm in northwest India. Showers in the southern region were 130% above normal at 13.8 mm. Rainfall was 18% below normal in the central region at 8.1 mm.

However, east and northeast India have received rainfall that is 12% below normal so far this season. Northwest India has received normal rainfall while the remaining two regions have recorded rainfall that is above normal.

So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 21 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in eight and "deficient" in five subdivisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in two subdivisions since Jun 1.

Under the influence of a low pressure area over central Bangladesh, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely over northeast India over the next two days, the weather bureau said. It added that extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura today.

To prevent the submergence of transplanted paddy seedlings in Tripura and Mizoram, the bureau has suggested that farmers drain excess water from fields and postpone the sowing of cowpea in Meghalaya.  End
