NEW DELHI – The government will hold the second National Conference of Enforcement Chiefs of State and Central GST formations in the national capital on Tuesday, a senior finance ministry official said today. The meeting, which is being held to strengthen enforcement to ensure the success of the goods and services tax system, is expected to discuss teething issues in the second special drive to weed out fake GST registrations, the official told Informist.

Central and state GST officers launched a special two-month drive on Friday to weed out fake GST registrations to prevent revenue loss to the government. "It will be a day-long meeting of state and central GST officers where the officials will primarily exchange ideas and findings about region-wise study on GST systems," the official said.

At the meeting, state officials may also raise with central officers any new issue that has cropped up in a particular state, which the officers can then work together to streamline, the official said.

The first enforcement conference was held on Mar 4 where the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs decided to expand to all states and Union territories the pilot launched last year to curtail GST evasion using technology. It was also decided at the conference that the officials would meet every six months to identify new challenges to the system and exchange information and initiatives.

Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra, CBIC Chairman Sanjay Agarwal, and a few other senior finance ministry officials will attend the conference, along with representatives from the Enforcement Directorate and Goods and Services Tax Network. The March conference was inaugurated by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The official did not confirm if Sitharaman would attend this time.

Since the conference is being held ahead of the GST Council meeting, the official said a few state officers may also make suggestions on items to include on the agenda for the Council. The GST Council will hold its 54th meeting on Sep 9.

While there are a few issues pending with the Council, the agenda is yet to be finalised, Informist reported on Aug 12. Typically, the agenda is shared with state finance ministers a week to 10 days ahead of the meeting.  End
