India rain 30% below normal today, 3% above normal since Jun 1

 --IMD: India Aug 19 rainfall at 5.5 mm, 30% below normal 

 --IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 19 rainfall at 632.5 mm, 3% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – The rainfall across the country today was 5.5 mm, 30% below the normal of 7.9 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 632.5 mm rainfall, 3% above the normal of 611.8 mm for the period, it said.

 

All the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers. Rainfall was 7% below normal at 9.6 mm in east and northeast India, and 40% below normal at 5.8 mm in central India. Rainfall was 36% below normal in the southern region at 3.5 mm. Showers in northwestern India were 31% below normal at 4.3 mm. 

 

Under the influence of a low pressure area over south Bangladesh, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over east and east-central India during the next three days, the IMD said today. In eastern India, heavy rainfall is likely over West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand during the next four days, the department said.

 

So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 19 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in nine, and "deficient" in six sub-divisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in two sub-divisions since Jun 1.

 

The weather bureau said heavy rainfall is very likely over the southern peninsula, including Kerala and Mahe, till Wednesday, Andhra Pradesh till Tuesday, and over parts of Karnataka for the next two days. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over some parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Lakshadweep till Tuesday, according to the weather agency. End
