July domestic air passenger traffic 12.99 mln, up 7.3% on year

MUMBAI – India's domestic airlines carried 12.99 mln passengers in July, up 7.3% from 12.10 mln passengers in the same month last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a press release. Domestic airlines carried 92.34 mln passengers in Jan-Jul, up 4.7% compared with 88.19 mln in the year-ago period.
Only two airlines, Indigo and Vistara, increased their market share in July. The market share of Indigo, India's largest airline, rose to 62.0% in July, up 120 basis points from 60.8% in June. Vistara's market share rose to 10% in July, up slightly from 9.7% in June. SpiceJet's market share fell to 3.1% in July from 3.8% in June. Tata Group-owned Air India's market share fell to 14.3% in July from 14.6% in June. Akasa Air's market share fell to 4.7% in July from 4.8% in June.
In July, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India, Akasa Air, and Vistara, all saw a decline in passenger load factor. The passenger load factor, which shows the capacity utilisation, was the highest for Spicejet at 90.3%, followed by Vistara at 90.0%.
Indigo's passenger load factor declined to 84.6% in July from 87.0% in the previous month, and Vistara's passenger load factor declined to 90.0% in July from 91.0% in June. Spicejet's passenger load factor declined to 90.3% in July from 91.5% the previous month, Air India's passenger load factor declined to 82.2% in July from 84.7% a month ago, and Akasa Air's passenger load factor declined to 86.4% in July from 89.6% in June.
Across the four metros, AIX Connect, formerly known as Air-Asia, reported the highest on-time performance of 70.3% in July. Vistara reported the second highest on-time performance of 64.6% in July, followed by Akasa Air at 64.2%. Indigo reported a 62.0% on-time performance, Air India reported a 57.4% on-time performance, and Spicejet reported the lowest on-time performance of 29.3%.
The flight cancellation rate for domestic airlines in July was 1.90%, the DGCA release said. Among the major players, Spicejet reported the highest cancellation rate of 3.11%, followed by Indigo at 2.25%. Akasa Air reported a cancellation rate of 0.93%, Air India reported a 0.47?ncellation rate, and Vistara reported the lowest cancellation rate of 0.09%.
A total of 1,097 passenger complaints were received by domestic airlines in July, the regulator said. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried in July was around 0.84. Flight problems, the major reason for passenger complaints, accounted for 38.6% of the total passenger complaints.
On the National Stock Exchange, shares of Interglobe Aviation today closed at 4,231.95 rupees, down 1.1%. On the BSE, SpiceJet ended 1.4% higher at 56.39 rupees. End
