NEW DELHI – Under the influence of a low pressure area over south Bangladesh, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over east and east-central India during the next three days, the India Meteorological Department said.

The low pressure area is likely to move further during the next 24 hours, and run across the plains of West Bengal, Jharkhand, adjoining Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the department said. The monsoon trough lies near its normal position at mean sea level, the weather bureau said.

In eastern India, heavy rainfall is likely over West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar and Jharkhand during the next four days, while the same weather pattern is expected over Odisha today, Tuesday and Friday, the department said. Additionally, very heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of the northeastern states over the next few days, and over the plains of West Bengal till Tuesday.

Since Jun 1, the east and northeastern parts of the country have received 837.3 mm of rainfall, 13% below normal for the period, according to IMD's data. In central India, heavy rainfall is expected over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and central Maharashtra during the next few days.

Rainfall between 64.5 mm and 124.4 mm in a day over a particular region is categorised as "heavy", while 124.5-244.4 mm over a single day is categorised as "very heavy". When the rainfall recorded in a day is more than or equal to 244.5 mm, it is termed "extremely heavy".

Meanwhile, in the southern peninsula, heavy rainfall is very likely over Telangana today, Kerala and Mahe till Wednesday, Andhra Pradesh till Tuesday and over parts of Karnataka for the next two days, the department said. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over some parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Lakshadweep till Tuesday, according to the weather agency.  End
