NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court has taken a suo motu cognisance of the incident involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a state-run medical college in Kolkata. The three-judge Bench led by the Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud will hear the case on Tuesday, according to the apex court's list of matters.
The Bench, also comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra, may also look into the acts of vandalism by a mob at the hospital on Wednesday.
On Aug 13, the Calcutta High Court had transferred the probe into the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The high court had said that there was no significant progress in the investigation by the West Bengal police.
The high court was hearing multiple petitions, including by parents of the victim, seeking transfer of the probe to an independent agency. On Friday, the high court had criticised the state's police over mob violence and vandalisation of parts of the hospital and termed it an absolute failure of the state machinery. The high court had asked the police and hospital authority to file affidavits narrating the true state of affairs at the hospital.
A 31-year-old junior doctor was found dead at a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Aug 9. Police had, thereafter, arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. There have been protests and strikes by doctors in several cities in the entire country over the case. End
