NEW DELHI – In light of the recent case of rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the health ministry has announced that it will constitute a committee to suggest possible measures for ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals in the country. Representatives of all stakeholders, including the state governments, will be invited to share their suggestions with the committee, the health ministry said in a press release today.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare met the representatives of the Federation of Resident Doctors Association, Indian Medical Association and Resident Doctors’ Associations of Governmental Medical Colleges and Hospitals of Delhi here. The decision to form a committee came after the associations put forth their demands regarding the safety and security of healthcare workers at the workplace, the press release said.
"The representatives of all the associations were informed that the government is well aware of the situation and is sensitive to their demands," the ministry said. "It was observed that 26 states have already passed legislation for protection of healthcare workers in their respective states."
Further, amid an ongoing nationwide doctors' strike called by the Indian Medical Association, the health ministry urged the agitating doctors to resume their duties in the larger public interest and in view of the rising cases of dengue and malaria.
On Aug 9, a 31-year-old junior doctor was found dead in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Police had, thereafter, arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. The Calcutta High Court has transferred the probe regarding the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The incident has brought medical services to a standstill as students and doctors across the country demand justice for the victim. End
