NEW DELHI – In a major reshuffle in the top bureaucratic positions, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Corporate Affairs Secretary Manoj Govil as the next expenditure secretary in the finance ministry.
The government has also appointed Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh as the defence secretary. Singh will take over his new role after the current Defence Secretary Aramane Giridhar's tenure ends on Oct 10, a government order said. The committee also approved the extension in service of Singh as defence secretary beyond the age of superannuation, till Oct 10, 2026.
Singh will be replaced as Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Secretary by Amardeep Singh Bhatia, who is currently an additional secretary in Department of Commerce.
Govil, who has been appointed as the expenditure secretary, will be replaced by Deepti Gaur Mukerjee as the corporate affairs secretary. Mukerjee is currently the chief executive officer at National Health Authority.
The appointments panel also approved the appointment of Nagaraju Maddirala as the next banking secretary. Maddirala will replace Vivek Joshi as banking secretary, as Joshi has been appointed as secretary, Department of Personnel and Training.
Further, the panel has appointed Minority Affairs Secretary Katikithala Srinivas as the next Housing and Urban Affairs secretary.
Airports Authority of India Chairman Sanjeev Kumar will be the new secretary in the Department of Defence Production, while Prashant Kumar Singh will become the New and Renewable Energy secretary.
The big reshuffle comes days after Finance Secretary T.V. Somanathan was appointed as Cabinet secretary for two years from Aug 30, replacing Rajiv Gauba, who has held the position since August 2019. The government on Wednesday had appointed Culture Secretary Govind Mohan as the next secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. End
