NEW DELHI – The unemployment rate in India's urban areas eased to 6.6% in Apr-Jun from a four-quarter high of 6.7% in Jan-Mar, according to the National Sample Survey Office's latest Periodic Labour Force Survey released today. The labour force participation rate, on other hand, eased slightly to 50.1% in the quarter ended June from a record high of 50.2% in Jan-Mar.

The urban unemployment rate was 6.6% in Apr-Jun 2023 as well. The urban unemployment rate had peaked at 20.8% in Apr-Jun 2020, when the government had imposed a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the quarter ended June, the urban unemployment rate among males eased to 5.8% from 6.1% in the previous quarter, while it rose to 9.0% among females from 8.5% in Jan-Mar.

The youth unemployment rate between the age of 15 and 29 eased to 16.8% in Apr-Jun from 17.0% in the previous quarter. Among the youth, the female unemployment rate was 23.0% in Apr-Jun, higher than 22.7% in Jan-Mar. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for males between the ages of 15 and 29 years eased to 14.8% in the quarter ended June from 15.1% Jan-Mar.

Unemployment was highest in Jammu and Kashmir during Apr-Jan at 11.5%, followed by Rajasthan and Kerala, where the joblessness rate was 10.0%. The unemployment rate was the lowest in Delhi at 2.5%, followed by Gujarat at 3.7% and Karnataka at 4.5%.

The female labour force participation lagged the male participation rate in Apr-Jun. The female labour force participation rate was just 25.2% in Apr-Jun, as against 74.7% participation for males. Labour force participation rate is defined as the percentage of people in the population above the age of 15 years working or available for work.

The worker population ratio, the percentage of employed persons in the population, eased to 46.8% in Apr-Jun from a record high of 46.9% in Jan-Mar. The worker population ratio among males rose to 70.4% in the quarter ended June from 69.8% in Jan-Mar, while it fell among females to 23.0% from 23.4% a quarter ago.

The survey covered 45,016 urban households and 171,121 people during the quarter. The statistics office releases the Periodic Labour Force Survey quarterly and annually. While the annual survey covers both rural and urban areas, the quarterly survey is only for urban areas.

Informist had previously reported that the statistics ministry is looking to release the urban unemployment survey on a monthly basis, and the rural unemployment survey on a quarterly basis from early next year.  End
