MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 8.4 mm, 6% below the normal of 8.9 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 615.1 mm of rainfall, 5% above the normal of 588.0 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.
Rainfall was below normal in three homogeneous regions of the country, while one region received above normal rain. East and northeast India received 33% below normal rainfall at 7.7 mm, and in south peninsular India, rains were 47% below normal at 3.4 mm. Rainfall in central India was 25% below normal showers at 7.7 mm. In northwest India, rainfall was 62% above normal at 7.7 mm.
Heavy rainfall is likely over several parts of eastern and central India next week under the influence of a low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal, the weather department said.
The weather bureau said that Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are expected to get heavy rainfall during the next few days. Very heavy rainfall is also expected in some pockets of Chhattisgarh on Saturday.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 17 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 11, "large excess" in two, and "deficient" in six sub-divisions. End
