NEW DELHI - The Election Commission of India today said Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases – Sep 18, Sep 25 and Oct 1 and elections in Haryana will be held in a single phase on Oct 1. The counting of votes for both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana assemblies will be done on Oct 4.

This would be the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after it became a Union Territory in 2019.

"There are a total of 90 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, of which 74 are general, SC-7 and ST-9.

The Amarnath Yatra will end on Aug 19 and the final voter list will also be published on Aug 20," Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said.

The commission said Jammu and Kashmir will have a total of 8.7 mln voters, including 4.4 mln male voters and 4.2 mln female electors. Significantly, the last elections in Jammu and Kashmir took place in November-December 2014. The assembly was dissolved in November 2018 and the state was bifurcated into two Union territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh — in 2019.

In Haryana, elections for 90 Assembly constituencies will be held on Oct 1. The election commission said there are 20 mln voters in the state and 20,629 polling stations. There would be an average of 977 voters per polling station.  End
