NEW DELHI – India will not only become the third-largest economy in his third term, the country is also capable of becoming a developed economy by 2047, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today in his 11th Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.

Modi listed out the reforms his governments have undertaken over the last 10 years and said that his government is committed to more reforms to achieve the developed economy goal. "Viksit Bharat 2047 is more than just a phrase of speech," Modi said while addressing the nation on the 78th Independence Day.

He talked about various sectors in the economy, from women-led self-help groups to the space sector to banking, saying that all these have come a long way and that the health of these sectors is important for the economy to continue to grow. Modi also outlined the vision to transform India into a global manufacturing hub, including in the production of semiconductors.

The prime minister said that the government will introduce 75,000 new seats in the medical stream in the next five years. He said that around 25,000 youths go abroad every year to study medicine. "We want to build such an education system in India that youngsters do not need to go abroad to study. In fact, we would want foreign students to come here and study," Modi said.

On the current political turmoil in Bangladesh, Modi said he hopes "things will be normal" in the neighbouring country. "We want our neighbouring countries to tread the path of peace and happiness. We will remain well-wishers of Bangladesh," he said.

He also addressed the series of recent natural disasters in the country. "I extend my heartfelt sympathies to all those affected and assure them that we stand with them in this difficult hour," he said.

The prime minister also spoke about the issue of violence against women in the wake of the nation-wide protest over the rape and murder of a medical student in Kolkata, saying he shares the public anger over such incidents. He asked the country, society, and state governments to address this matter with urgency.

Modi also called for "One Nation One Election" and a Uniform Civil Code today. He said the country needs to abolish discriminatory laws and should have a secular civil code. "We need to transition from a communal civil code to a secular one."

He urged the political community to back the idea of simultaneous elections. "Frequent elections create stagnation in the nation. Today, every scheme and initiative seems to be influenced by election cycles, and every action is coloured by political considerations," PM Modi said.  End
