NEW DELHI – Addressing the nation on the eve of 78th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu today said that steps taken by the government to promote artificial intelligence, semiconductor sectors, and start-ups have set the stage for the next generation of economic reforms and to make India a developed nation.

In December 2021, the government had notified the programme for development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in the country with a total outlay of 760 bln rupees. In March this year, the Union Cabinet approved an outlay of 103.72 bln rupees as part of a mission to develop an ecosystem in India for artificial intelligence.

On the internship scheme announced in the Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the President said the scheme will benefit the youth of the country. "The Prime Minister's package of five schemes for employment and skilling will benefit 4.1 crore (41 mln) youth over five years. Under a new initiative of the government, one crore (10 mln) youth will be doing internships in leading companies over five years. All this will be a foundational contribution towards building Viksit Bharat," she said.

Murmu highlighted the government's steps towards developing the country's infrastructure, road network, highways, railways and ports in recent years.

She asserted that India has been among the fastest growing economies since 2021, with an average annual growth rate of 8%. The number of people living below the "poverty line" has "drastically" reduced over these years, she said. The government provided free ration for 800 mln during the COVID-19 pandemic under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which continues with the scheme so that these people do not fall below the poverty line again, she said.

Murmu credited the farmers, labourers and policymakers for the country's growth. She said that farmers have contributed immensely to make the country self-reliant in agriculture and feed the people.

G-20 PRESIDENCY

Murmu echoed India's higher stature in global affairs, citing the successful completion of G-20 presidency where the country consolidated its role as the voice of the Global south. "India intends to use its influential position to expand the scope of world peace and prosperity," Murmu said.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

The president said that social justice is the government's top priority. She flagged a list of initiatives the government has taken for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other marginalised sections of society.

"Pradhan Mantri Samajik Utthan evam Rozgar Adharit Jankalyan, that is, PM-SURAJ, for example, aims to provide direct financial assistance to the people from the marginalised communities. The Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan or PM-JANMAN has taken the form of a mass campaign for critical interventions to improve socio-economic conditions of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, that is, PVTGs," Murmu said.

She also hailed the government for giving equal importance to women's welfare and women’s empowerment.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The president said that climate change has become a reality. "It is all the more challenging for developing nations to change their economic paradigm. Yet, we have already made more progress in that direction than expected," Murmu said, adding that India is proud to be at the forefront of humankind's battle to save the planet from the worst effects of global warming.

She appealed to the people to make small but "effective changes in the lifestyle and contribute to the cause of dealing with the challenge of climate change."  End
