--IMD: India Aug 14 rainfall 5.8 mm, 34 below normal 

--India Jun 1-Aug 14 rainfall 598.5 mm, 5% above normal

NEW DELHI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 5.8 mm, 34% below the normal of 8.8 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 598.5 mm of rainfall, 5% above the normal of 570.7 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.

Rainfall was below normal in three out of the four homogenous regions of the country. Rainfall was 34% below normal at 8.5 mm in east and northeast India, and 29% lower at 5.6 mm in the northwestern parts of the country. In the central parts, precipitation was as much as 64% lower than usual at 3.4 mm today. 

Only southern peninsular India received 39% above normal rainfall at 7.9 mm today, according to the weather department's data. In south India, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have received excess rainfall since the monsoon season began on Jun 1. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam have also received heavy rainfall since June, according to the data.  

Today, the weather bureau said heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of south India over the next few days.

So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 18 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 11, "large excess" in one and "deficient" in six sub-divisions.  End
