Govt details 109 high-yielding varieties unveiled by PM Modi on Sun

NEW DELHI – Of the 109 high-yielding seed varieties Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled on Sunday, cereals had the highest share, followed by pulses and oilseeds, the agriculture ministry said in a release today. Other field crops that the government wants to increase productivity of are sugarcane, cotton, and jute.
Of the 109 varieties, 69 were field crops, and 40 were horticultural crops, the release said. In horticulture crops, different varieties of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tubers, spices, flowers, and medicinal crops were released.
In the cereal basket, rice topped with nine varieties, maize with six, wheat with two, and millet varieties with one seed variety each. Of the 11 pulses seeds, lentils had three, while chickpea, pigeon pea, and moongbean had two seed varieties each, among others.
In the oilseed basket, Modi released two varieties each of safflower, soybean, and groundnut. One variety of sesame was also released. To improve productivity, the government also released four sugarcane, six cotton seed, and one jute variety.
In horticultural crops, mangoes topped fruits, tomatoes and Indian beans were top vegetable varieties, and potato was the top tuber crop. Cocoa, cashew, and coconut are the crops that the government wants to improve productivity of in plantation crops.
Experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendras, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and state agricultural universities should proactively inform farmers about the benefits of the new varieties, Modi said on Sunday. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said farmers will receive seeds from all 109 varieties within three years. End
