--IMD: India Aug 12 rainfall 7.9 mm, 10% below normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 12 rainfall 587.6 mm, 6% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 7.9 mm, 10% below the normal of 8.7 mm for the day, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India has received 587.6 mm of rainfall, 6% above the normal of 552.6 mm for the period, it said.

 

Three out of four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers. Rainfall was 18% below normal at 10.2 mm in east and northeast India, and 42% lower at 5.6 mm in central India. Rainfall was 3% below normal in the southern region at 6.8 mm. Showers in northwestern India were 39% above normal at 9.9 mm.

 

According to the bureau, there is a risk of low-to-moderate flash floods over neighbourhoods of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe and south interior Karnataka in the next 24 hours. This could cause localised flooding of roads and damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation, the weather department said. 

 

The weather department forecast heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh till Thursday and over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Saturday. It also predicted heavy rains over Gangetic West Bengal from Wednesday to Sunday, over Jharkhand and Odisha till Friday, and over Bihar till Sunday.

 

So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 18 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 11, and "deficient" in six sub-divisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in one sub-division since Jun 1.  End
