MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department today predicted heavy-to-very heavy rainfall over parts of the southern peninsula, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu, over the next five days. The weather bureau has also predicted very heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan on Tuesday.

Parts of Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, south interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep are likely to get heavy-to-very heavy rainfall till Thursday, the weather bureau said.

In northwest India, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and west Rajasthan till Sunday, over east Rajasthan and Haryana till Friday, and over Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday to Friday. Punjab is likely to get heavy rains on Wednesday.

Similarly, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till Tuesday and over east Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday.

The weather department forecast heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh till Thursday and over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Saturday. It also predicted heavy rains over Gangetic West Bengal from Wednesday to Sunday, Jharkhand and Odisha till Friday, and over Bihar till Sunday.

According to the bureau, there is a risk of low-to-moderate flash floods over neighbourhoods of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe and south interior Karnataka in the next 24 hours. This could cause localised flooding of roads and damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation, the weather department said.

It suggested that farmers drain excess water from field crops and horticultural crops in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka. It also asked farmers to make provisions for draining excess water from standing crop fields and fruit orchards in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Kerala.

"In Assam, postpone sowing of sesame, green gram and black gram," the agromet division of the weather bureau said. End
