Govt may release unemployment data more regularly from Jan, says official

NEW DELHI – The statistics ministry may start releasing the urban unemployment survey on a monthly basis, and the rural unemployment survey on a quarterly basis from early next year, a senior ministry official said.
The government may release the monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey for urban areas in January next year, and the quarterly survey for rural areas in Jan-Mar, the official said.
At present, the National Sample Survey Office measures urban and rural unemployment as part of the Periodic Labour Force Survey. Urban employment data is released on a quarterly and annual basis, while the rural unemployment survey is only conducted on an annual basis.
The unemployment rate in India's urban areas rose to a four-quarter high of 6.7% in Jan-Mar from 6.5% in the previous quarter, as per the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey. The urban unemployment rate was 6.8% in Jan-Mar of 2023.
The urban unemployment rate had peaked to 20.8% in Apr-Jun 2020, when the government had imposed a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the quarter ended March, the urban unemployment rate was 6.1% among males and 8.5% among females. The overall unemployment rate was 3.1% in 2023.
The rural unemployment rate declined to 2.4% last year from 2.8% in 2022, and the urban unemployment rate moderated to 5.2% in 2023 from 5.9%. End
