AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India in Apr-Jul rose 4.43% on year to 278.51 mln tn, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed.
This minor rise was mainly led by a slight uptrend in crude and petroleum products cargo, which account for nearly one-third of the total cargo handled at all major ports across the country. Crude and petroleum products cargo volume rose 2.36% on year to 81.97 mln tn in Apr-Jul. Other than crude oil, container traffic in tonnage terms saw a 5.49% on-year increase to 62.60 mln tn, and coking coal volume rose 4.94% to 21.16 mln tn. The thermal coal cargo volume for Apr-Jul rose 3.47% on year to 44.86 mln tn.
The miscellaneous traffic for the first four months of the fiscal was up 18.77% on year to 28.42 mln tn.
The increase in cargo handled in Apr-Jul was under pressure due to lower iron ore volumes, which were down 3.99% on year to 17.64 mln tn, fall in finished fertilizers cargo, which was down 29.29% on year to 2.29 mln tn and low raw fertilisers volumes, which were down 8.94% on year to 2.87 mln tn.
Among the specific ports, Paradip handled the highest traffic in Apr-Jul at 50.16 mln tn, followed by Deendayal port at 47.79 mln tn, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 29.54 mln tn.
