NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet today approved the Clean Plant Programme with an investment of 17.66 bln rupees. The programme is expected to enhance the quality and productivity of fruit crops across the country.

The scheme was proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and is likely to help the horticulture sector in India. One of its benefits is to provide farmers with virus-free, high-quality planting materials, leading to higher crop yields.

The government said nine clean plant centres, equipped with advanced diagnostic therapeutics and tissue culture labs, will be established across India. "These centres will play a crucial role in producing and maintaining virus-free planting material meant for larger propagation," the government said in a press release.

The initiative will also provide large-scale nurseries to develop horticultural infrastructure and facilitate the efficient multiplication of clean planting material.  End
