NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved eight railway projects covering 14 districts across seven states with a total estimated cost of 246.57 bln rupees, according to an official release.
The committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took the decision with a view to "improve logistical efficiency by connecting the unconnected areas and enhancing transportation networks." The new railway lines in the mineral-rich states will streamline supply chains and accelerate economic growth, the government said.
The projects will be completed by 2030-31, it said, adding that these projects will generate employment of about 30 mln man-days during construction.
The projects will increase the existing network of the Indian Railways by 900 km in Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana and West Bengal. The railways ministry said that 64 new stations will be constructed under the new projects, providing enhancing connectivity to six aspirational districts--East Singhbum, Bhadadri Kothagudem, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada--and 510 villages and about 4 mln population.
The state of Odisha has got the major chunk of the new railway lines approved by Cabinet today. The railways ministry stated that the Cabinet approved the 73.62 km Gunupur–Therubali line, 116.21 km Junagarh–Nabrangpur line, 82.06 km Badampahar–Kandujhargarh line and 85.60 km Bangriposi–Gorumahisani line in Odisha.
Odisha also got two new lines connecting it to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The 173.61 km Malkangiri–Pandurangapuram line, cleared by Cabinet, will connect Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, while the 59.96 km Buramara–Chakulia line will connect Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Apart from these states, two railway lines were approved in Maharashtra and Bihar. The 174 km Jalna–Jalgaon railway line will come up in Maharashtra, while the 26.23 km Bikramshila–Katareah line will be laid in Bihar.
The government said that the projects will boost the transportation of commodities and will also help in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics' costs of the country.
"These are essential routes for transportation of commodities such as agriculture products, fertiliser, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, bauxite, limestone, aluminium powder, granite, ballast, containers etc. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 143 mtpa," the government said. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that these projects will also reduce oil imports and lower carbon dioxide emissions. End
