MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 7.6 mm, 12% below the normal of 8.6 mm for the day, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India has received 563.7 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal of 526.9 mm for the period, it said.
Two of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers. Rainfall was 17% below normal at 5.6 mm in the southern peninsula and 35% lower than normal at 7.1 mm in central India. Precipitation in east and northeast India was 34% above normal at 11.9 mm. Northwest India received normal showers at 7.1 mm today.
The weather bureau has predicted heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall in certain places over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next seven days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of Assam and Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, East Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu for the same duration, according to the weather bureau.
The rainfall in east and norteast India and northwest India so far has been below normal. The east and northeast India received 11% below normal rains at 753.0 mm since Jun 1 and rainfall in the northwest was 5% below normal at 335.9 mm, the data showed.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 16 of the 36 subdivisions in the country and one has received "large excess" showers. Rainfall was "excess" in 12, and "deficient" in seven subdivisions, the weather bureau said. End
