NEW DELHI – India today expressed concern over the current situation in Bangladesh and held the safety and well-being of people in Bangladesh as its top priority. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a media briefing, highlighted India's focus on the interests of the Bangladeshi population.

"As far as India is concerned, the interests of the people of Bangladesh are foremost in our mind," Jaiswal said.

While acknowledging the evolving nature of the situation in the neighbouring country, Jaiswal said India is closely monitoring the developments. "We have an evolving situation before us. As a close friend of the people of Bangladesh, it is our understanding that we want the restoration of peace and stability in the country as soon as possible so that normal life can begin," he added.

Jaiswal, however, refused to provide any update on former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s future plans. "It is not appropriate to talk about her plans," Jaiswal said, adding that he has no updates regarding Hasina's departure from the country. Hasina fled to India on Monday after stepping down as Bangladesh prime minister amid violent protests demanding her resignation. On the question of India providing political asylum to Hasina, Jaiswal said, "Our external affairs minister has already explained the approval for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to come to India was given at short notice."

India also expressed concerns over the attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh. "India has taken note of the steps by various groups in Bangladesh for the protection of minorities but remains deeply concerned about the situation. Every government is responsible for the well-being of its citizens," Jaiswal said. He also said the government is in touch with the authorities in Bangladesh for the safety and security of the personnel in the Indian missions.

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed the situation in Bangladesh with Britain's Foreign Secretary David Lamy. "The situations in West Asia and in Bangladesh were discussed when Minister Jaishankar and the UK Foreign Secretary talked," Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of the interim government today.  End
