--IMD: India Aug 8 rainfall at 10.5 mm, 20% above normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 8 rainfall at 556.3 mm, 7% above normal 

MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 10.5 mm, 20% above the normal of 8.7 mm for the day, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India received 556.3 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal of 518.3 mm for the period, it said.

Three of the four homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers. Rainfall was 34% above normal at 12.2 mm in east and northeast India and 41% above normal at 9.7 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 35% above normal at 8.2 mm in south peninsula region. However, the precipitation was normal in central India at 11.6 mm.

The India Meterological Department said heavy rainfall is very likely during the weekend over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar. Similar weather patterns are very likely over parts of northeast India for the next seven days and over east India for the next four days, it said.

The bureau asked farmers in Arunachal Pradesh to make proper arrangements for run-off management in jhum rice fields by putting obstacles across the slopes. In Assam, it advised farmers to provide mulching in ginger and turmeric fields.

So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 15 of the 36 subdivisions in the country and two have received "large excess" showers. Rainfall was "excess" in 12, and "deficient" in seven subdivisions, the weather bureau said.  End
