IMD sees heavy rain in northeast during weekend, cautions farmers

MUMBAI – The India Meterological Department said heavy rainfall is very likely during the weekend over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar. Similar weather patterns are very likely over parts of northeast India for the next seven days and over east India for the next four days, it said.
During the week, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over east and northeast India, the weather bureau said.
Given these conditions, the bureau urged farmers to drain excess water from field crops and horticultural crops in the plains of northwest, central, south, and east India. It also asked farmers in the northeastern states, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh to drain excess water from fields with standing crops and from fruit orchards to avoid stagnation.
The bureau asked farmers in Arunachal Pradesh to make proper arrangements for run-off management in jhum rice fields by putting obstacles across the slopes. In Assam, it advised farmers to provide mulching in ginger and turmeric fields.
"Subdued rainfall activity likely over peninsular India during (the) next seven days," the weather office said. Heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till Monday. Similar weather patterns are seen over parts of Kerala and Mahe from Saturday to Tuesday, it said.
East Rajasthan is expected to receive very heavy rainfall today, the bureau said. It forecast very heavy showers over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Saturday.
During the past 24 hours, very heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of east Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha, the agency said.
In the western parts, Gujarat region, Konkan, Kutch, Saurashtra, and Goa are expected to receive widespread rainfall during the week. Similar weather patterns are likely over parts of Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and central Maharashtra in central India during the week, it said.
In the Jun-Sep monsoon season till Wednesday, India received 545.9 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal for the period, according to data from the meteorological department. End
