IMD sees heavy rain in northwest for next 3-4 days, cautions farmers

NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has urged farmers to make provisions to drain excess water from standing crop fields as it expects the plains of northwest, central and east India to receive widespread heavy rainfall during the next three to four days. 

 

The weather bureau has urged farmers to drain excess water from fruit orchards to avoid water stagnation in northeastern states, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It has also asked the farmers to provide mechanical support to horticulture crops and staking to vegetables. 

 

The department said widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan during the rest of the week. Similar weather patterns are also expected over Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi during the week, it said.   

 

In the western parts, interior Gujarat, Konkan, Goa and central Maharashtra are expected to receive widespread rainfall during the week. Extremely heavy rainfall is seen over some parts of Chhattisgarh in central India for the rest of today, the bureau said.

 

In the east and northeastern parts of the country, very heavy rainfall is likely over some parts of Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya during the next three days. Parts of West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar are also expected to receive very heavy rains over the next couple of days, the weather bureau said. Additionally, heavy showers are also expected over the plains of West Bengal during the rest of the week. 

 

The weather bureau asked farmers in Arunachal Pradesh to make proper arrangements for run-off management in jhum rice fields by putting obstacles across the slopes. In Assam, it was advised to provide mulching in ginger and turmeric, while in Odisha the department has urged people to postpone the sowing of maize, pigeon peas and vegetables.  


In the south, heavy showers are expected over coastal Karnataka till Thursday, and Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh today, it said. In the Jun-Sep monsoon season till today, India received 545.9 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal for the period, according to IMD's data.  End
