MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 10.1 mm, 10% above the normal of 9.2 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 533.3 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal of 500.2 mm for the period, it said.
Three of the four homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers. Rainfall was 75% above normal at 17.8 mm in east and northeast India and 79% above normal at 13.3 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 55% below normal in central India, but the precipitation for today was 12% above normal at 6.8 mm in the south peninsula.
So far this monsoon season, rainfall has been normal in 14 of the 36 subdivisions in the country and one has received "large excess" showers. Rainfall was "excess" in 14 subdivisions and "deficient" in seven, the weather office said.
The meteorological department has forecast fairly widespread rainfall over northwest India and east and northeast India over the next seven days. So far during the southwest monsoon, east and northeast India has received 12% below normal precipitation at 713.9 mm.
The weather bureau predicted widespread to fairly widespread rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi during the next seven days.
In east and northeast India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Odisha and Bihar.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over a few parts of east Madhya Pradesh and heavy rainfall is expected over west Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Konkan and Goa, and Gujarat during the week. End
