--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 5 rainfall 523.4 mm, 7% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 10.7 mm, 18% above the normal of 9.1 mm for the day, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India has received 523.4 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal of 491.0 mm for the period, it said.

 

Two out of four homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers. Rainfall was 77% above normal at 12.0 mm in northwest India and 20% above normal at 14.7 mm in central India. Rainfall was 35% below normal in east and northeast India at 6.4 mm, and 17% below normal at 5.5 mm in the south peninsula.

 

So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 15 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 14, and "deficient" in seven subdivisions, it said.

 

The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of west Rajasthan today and very heavy rainfall over east Rajasthan today and on Thursday and Friday, Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday and Uttarakhand from Tuesday to Friday.

 

Moderate flash flood risk is likely over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of west Rajasthan, south Gujarat Region, Konkan, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand subdivisions during the next 24 hours, according to the weather agency. Surface inundation may occur in some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas due to expected rainfall occurrences in the next 24 hours, the weather bureau said. 

 

Very heavy rainfall is also very likely in parts of Gujarat and central Maharashtra today, the bureau said. The India Meteorological Department has also forecast heavy rainfall over parts of west Madhya Pradesh during the next five days, east Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, Chhattisgarh till Wednesday, Konkan and Goa till Saturday, central Maharashtra, Gujarat till Friday and over Saurashtra and Kutch today.

 

The monsoon trough is active and the south of the normal position at mean sea level and the offshore trough at mean sea level are running along south Gujarat to the northern Kerala coast, the bureau said.  End
