NEW DELHI – The government has mandated state-owned life and general insurers to fast-track claims related to the flood and landslides in various districts of Kerala. The insurers include Life Insurance Corp of India, National Insurance Co Ltd, The New India Assurance Co Ltd, The Oriental Insurance Co Ltd, and United India Insurance Co Ltd.

"The insurance companies have initiated efforts for reaching out to their policyholders through various channels (local newspapers, social media, company websites, sms, etc) to provide the contact details for assistance in the districts of Wayanad, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Thrissur, where a significant number of claims are being reported," the Ministry of Finance said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, today.

Documentation requirements have been eased for speedy processing, and LIC has been asked to disburse claim amounts under the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, a national insurance scheme.

"The General Insurance Council will coordinate with the insurance companies to ensure that claims are processed and paid expeditiously and will host a portal for all insurers to report claim status daily," the finance ministry said.

Heavy rainfall triggered massive landslides in Wayanad, killing over 350 people, according to various media reports. The landslides swept away Mundakkai, Chooralmala and Attamala areas in the district. The Centre issued early warnings about the likelihood of heavy rainfall and landslides to the Kerala government on three occasions in late July, Home Minister Amit Shah said in Parliament on Wednesday.

Rescue operations have been underway since Tuesday morning, with teams from the Indian Army, the Air Force, Navy, National Disaster Response Force, state police, and locals all engaged in relief work. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia compensation of 200,000 rupees to the next of kin of each deceased and 50,000 rupees for those injured.  End
