NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in parts of east India during the weekend under the influence of a low pressure area. The weather bureau said extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar and Jharkhand today.
All the four regions have been issued red alerts by the department for today. A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, and an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.
In the northeastern parts, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in some places of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura over the next four days. Heavy rainfall in a few pockets of the plains of West Bengal is also expected on Wednesday and Thursday.
The forecast of rainfall over the east and northeastern parts comes at a time when the deficit in precipitation in the region since Jun 1 is currently 18%, the highest among the four homogenous regions of the country. Except for sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, all other parts of the east and northeastern have received deficient showers since the monsoon season began.
In the western and central region, the IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of west Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa for the next couple of days.
The IMD also said that monsoon conditions are likely to remain active over the northwestern, eastern and central parts of the country for the next three to four days. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east Rajasthan during Sunday, and heavy rainfall in certain places over Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh is also expected in the next few days. End
