MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 15.5 mm, 74% above the normal of 8.9 mm for the day, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India has received 469.2 mm of rainfall, 3% above the normal of 454.7 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.
All four homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers. Rainfall was 35% above normal at 14.3 mm in east and northeast India and a whopping 187% above normal at 21.2 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 31% above normal in central India at 14.4 mm, and 37% above normal at 9.3 mm in the south peninsula.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 15 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 13, and "deficient" in eight subdivisions, the weather bureau said.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of central Maharashtra till Saturday, over parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday and Saturday, and over parts of Gujarat on Saturday. Extremely heavy rainfall is also very likely over parts of coastal Karnataka today.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra during the next five days. Similar weather conditions are also likely in parts of Madhya Pradesh till Sunday, in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh till Saturday, and in Saurashtra and Kutch on Saturday, the weather agency said.
The weather bureau expects rainfall over most of the country to be normal to above normal in Aug-Sep. Below normal rainfall is expected over many parts of northeast and adjoining areas of eastern India, Saurashtra and Kutch, and some pockets of central and peninsular India, it said. Similarly, for August, most parts of India are expected to experience normal rains, while below normal precipitation is likely over many areas in southern and central regions. Some pockets of eastern and northwestern India are also expected to experience lower than usual rainfall during this month.
Over the next few days, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, while interior parts of Gujarat are also likely to experience similar weather conditions on Saturday. During the second week of August, heavy rainfall is expected over most parts of the northern plains and eastern parts of the country, the bureau said. End
