MUMBAI – The Punjab government will give an incentive of 7,000 rupees per acre (1 acre = 0.40 ha) to farmers to encourage them to cultivate crops other than paddy as part of the government's crop diversification plan, according to the Punjab Information and Public Relations Department. Each farmer can avail the incentive for a maximum of 12.5 acres, the department said.

In July, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan agreed to add Punjab to the crop diversification plan. The primary objective of the programme is to reduce the area under paddy by promoting the plantation of pulses, cotton, and maize, among others.

The crop diversification programme is currently being implemented in Punjab with the sharing pattern of 60:40 between the Centre and the state government as a sub-scheme of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, according to the state agriculture department.

Paddy, a water-guzzling crop, has been a primary reason for groundwater depletion in Punjab. Further, farmers' real income has declined due to the almost stagnated productivity of wheat and paddy. End
