MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 7.7 mm, 11% below the normal of 8.6 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 453.8 mm of rainfall, 2% above the normal of 445.8 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.
Two homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers, while two received below normal rainfall. Rainfall was 40% below normal at 6.5 mm in east and northeast India and 57% below normal at 3.0 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 6% above normal in central India at 10.9 mm and 69% above normal at 6.1 mm in the south peninsula.
The weather department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of central Maharashtra from Thursday to Saturday, over parts of east Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and Friday, over parts of Konkan and Goa on Friday and Saturday, and over Gujarat on Saturday.
Over the next five days, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over some parts of the western coast. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over some parts of northwest, central and east India in the next three to four days, it said.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Uttarakhand till Saturday and over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh till Thursday, the department said.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 14 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 13, and "deficient" in nine sub-divisions. End
