NEW DELHI – The government today notified the establishment of Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunals across the country. The notification will take effect from Sep 1, 2023, said the Ministry of Finance.

On May 6, former chief justice of Jharkhand High Court Sanjaya Kumar Mishra took oath as the first president of the GST Appellate Tribunal. The appellate tribunal consists of the principal bench in Delhi and 31 state benches. Mishra will head the principal bench. The GST Appellate Tribunals will act as the second appellate authority within the GST framework to hear appeals against the orders passed by the appellate authority.

"The establishment of the GST Appellate Tribunal would further enhance the effectiveness of the GST system in India and foster a more transparent and efficient tax environment in the country," the ministry had said earlier. Last year, Parliament passed the Bill to raise the age limits for the president and members of the GST Appellate Tribunal from 67 years and 65 years, respectively, to 70 years.  End
