NEW DELHI – Former Union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Anurag Thakur today sparked a row in the Lok Sabha by making a "casteist" remark against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Referring to Gandhi’s demand for a caste census in the country, Thakur said one whose caste is unknown is talking about a caste census.

The remark drew a sharp reaction from the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, with members seeking an apology from Thakur. Gandhi intervened and reiterated the INDIA bloc’s commitment to a caste census. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav asked how the BJP leader could ask about the caste of the leader of the Opposition.

Earlier, Yadav took a swipe at the government's failure to prevent paper leaks and railway accidents, remarking that a competition seemed to be on between paper leaks and train accidents for higher numbers in the Narendra Modi government.

Rashtriya Janata Dal member Manoj Kumar Jha said in the Rajya Sabha that there had been no increase in payments to 5 mln skilled workers in education, health, and child welfare, mainly women, in the past five years. He also asked what was preventing the government from offering a legal guarantee for the minimum support prices for crops.

Both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha today continued to debate the Union Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, replying to the debate, said the opposition parties were playing politics on the issues of farmers and asked why Congress-led governments in the past did not implement a legal guarantee for minimum support prices.

The Lower House passed the Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2024, after Sitharaman’s reply to the debate on the Budget. The Lok Sabha has started discussing the demands for grants for the railway ministry.  End
